The Legal Brief is a UK legal news and insight publication for practising solicitors, trainees and law students. We cover topical legal developments, important new cases, regulatory updates and changes affecting the legal profession.
The Legal Brief was founded on a simple observation: legal news in the UK tends to fall into one of two camps — either too dense and technical for most readers, or too light to be of any practical use to practitioners. We set out to do something different.
Every piece we publish is written with a practitioner or student in mind — someone who needs to understand not just what happened, but what it means for their work, their clients or their career.
We cover the developments that matter most to those working in and entering the legal profession in England and Wales: Supreme Court decisions, Court of Appeal judgments, SRA regulatory updates, significant tribunal rulings, SQE and qualification developments, and the trends reshaping how law is practised and how solicitors are trained.
Alongside reporting on recent developments, we explain why they matter in practice — whether that is a new judgment, an SRA update, a change in professional regulation, a legal technology issue or a trend affecting law firms and future lawyers.
We apply the same standard to every piece we publish:
Practical first. Every article explains what a development means in practice. Where the answer is “it depends”, we say so and explain why.
Accurate and careful. We are not a law firm and we do not give legal advice. We report and analyse — accurately, without overstating what a judgment or regulatory change actually does.
Readable. Legal writing does not have to be difficult. We write clearly, edit carefully and make no assumptions beyond the fact that our readers are intelligent people with limited time.
Transparent about sources. We link to primary sources — the original judgment, the SRA guidance, the government consultation — so readers can go further if they need to.
The Legal Brief is designed for both practising and aspiring solicitors.
For practitioners, we cover regulation and compliance, case law and its practical implications, client care, legal technology, professional ethics and the business of running a law firm or an in-house team.
For students and future solicitors, we cover all four routes to qualification — the SQE standalone route, the Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship, the Graduate Solicitor Apprenticeship and the CILEX route — alongside training contract guidance, qualifying work experience, commercial awareness and career resources.
